The Nighttime Stomach

When he falls asleep I know it’s because he’s lying
on the boring side of my face.

I don’t sleep. I crouch inside of myself
and talk gently to the dog that looks like Lassie

who lives in the nighttime stomach.
Her head is tilted sideways like it’s missing

a stitch. What is it, Girl? I follow her
through the wet newspaper tunnel of my intestines.

Someone could be trapped in there.
Is it trouble at the well?

My impulses move like iridescent fruit flies
against a stain glass backdrop. It’s like I’m trespassing

through some hollow church and flinching
at the echo of my footsteps. The stomach

is a jar glowing with swarms of red
   candles. Lassie leads me

to a familiar chalkboard in there. Last night,
I stayed late and wrote believe me,

believe me,
two hundred times. When the words
are erased I can use the dust to dry everything up.

On the outside, a toothbrush lies
down in the medicine cabinet. A drawer hangs

open like a child peering over a bridge.
The stairs stack themselves in darkness.

To Roswell

I drove across the country with a stuffed rabbit
riding shotgun. I lifted his ear at the red
lights, whispered I’ll pull you

from a hat; death is like a magic trick

and then the word trick came to sound
like my car door unlocking itself.

Since I left, I’ve learned to decipher the logic
of a haystack, learned to slip off my promises
like a saddle. The world is a giant

scar. It goes where I go. I don’t know
how to drive. But I go.
I’m not in love, I’m in a boat.

The Table

No matter the house
I will be alone

at the table
no matter the excuse

I will be alone
at the table

no matter so suddenly
I will be alone

at the table
tongue no tongue again

not again the bath
and I will be alone

at the table
the cameras are busy

I will be alone
at the table no matter

left shoulder left
shoulder birthday

no birthday try no try
to swim, clutching the lake

no matter
unable unable

Mirror on a String

I wish there were two hundred of me. Then I could be alone.
Imagine. You really don’t smell that? A thing of the past.
Of course we smell that. No questions like that. Two hundred of me!
We each have a strange shadow.
It’s like a window where it’s too dark to see beyond the glass.
I fill a train with myself.
We each sit facing a dark window in the night.
We think we’ve missed our stop.
Inside the train is lit up everywhere on me.
It could be the wrong train.
I put my neon palm to the dark glass like we are in an aquarium.
On the other side there’s an invisible polar bear
turning like a snowflake in a bright blue jello mold.
We know only the glass.
When we start to die, it’s okay.
It’s like a stew growing thicker under the lid.
